During your career, people will set expectations around your future prospects which unfortunately may go unfulfilled.
You’ll be assured you’re up for promotion in the new year, but then get passed over because of unforeseen factors.
You’ll hear you’re on track for a nice bonus, but then the bonus pool dries up.
You may even be promised a certain opportunity, but the opportunity never seems to get any closer.
These “potential promises” will always be a part of your career because they are made by those who have a genuine interest in your future but unfortunately may not have the means to fulfil them.
So it’s important to take every assurance with a grain of salt and understand how your behaviour changes because of them.
Do you currently have a promise, assurance or indication from your manager?
Have your actions been influenced because of this?
What would it mean if this promise goes unfulfilled?
