We won’t want to break a habit until we realise it’s not serving us. Unfortunately, this realisation usually comes much after it became a bad habit, and only when the costs are too big to ignore.
But what if you could identify a bad habit before it gets too big?
Let’s take social media as an example. You may not call it a “good habit”, but would you go so far as saying it’s a “bad habit”?
Well, do you know how much you’re mindlessly using your phone throughout the day? Or responding to notifications?
You’re probably doing it more than you should. But how can you tell if it’s become a bad habit?
Put up a roadblock.
Why don’t you cut it for a day? Or an hour? Or even 10 minutes?
Delete the favourite app from your phone. Logout from your social media account. Physically place your phone out of reach.
Then see how long it takes for you to default to your behaviour. Observe how much discomfort it causes. Count how many times you go back to it on autopilot.
Once you put up a roadblock and interrupt your pattern, you’ll quickly understand if the behaviour is serving you or hurting you. So what roadblock will you put up today?
