Reverse mentoring

Most people think mentoring is a one-way transfer of wisdom.

Experienced mentor → Inexperienced mentee

But if you really want to advance in career, you must appreciate that the flow should reverse.

If you’re the mentee, you’re not just there to take notes and nod along.

You bring fresh insights, different perspectives and questions your mentor might not be asking themselves.

Treat it as a chance to practise managing up, influencing someone senior and adding value in a way that strengthens the relationship.

If you’re the mentor, this is your chance to be mentored by someone who doesn’t share your habits or crutches.

Their inexperience means they’ll see possibilities you’re filtering out.

They’ll challenge assumptions you didn’t realise you were holding.

If you’re sticking to the traditional mentoring roles, you’re limiting the growth potential of both sides.

The best mentoring is a conversation where everyone gains insights.
