There is a scene in The Dark Knight where Alfred says to Bruce, “Some men just want to watch the world burn”. He’s describing the Joker, and how his actions may not be driven by things that are logical.
Yes it’s a Hollywood movie. Yes it’s fiction. Yes it’s an extreme character.
But within that expression there is an essence of truth that applies to us all.
How many times have you been in an argument with someone where the overriding desire is more harm than good?
Bec and I call this the “scorched earth policy”. Sure, you can go ahead and make your point. But at what cost? What are you really trying to gain from your remarks?
Are you simply wanting to watch the world burn? Or do you want to have a conversation?
