Serving your time

When you are working in a role or with an organisation, do you feel you need to stay for a particular period of time? If so, I’d encourage you to challenge this assumption.

It’s natural to assume that we should “serve our time” in a position before moving on. The problem though is this assumption is usually arbitrary. Maybe it’s because people “usually stay in this role for 3 years”. Or, “my colleague was promoted after 5 years”. Or, “this is my first job out of uni and I’m seeing how it goes”.

Unless these arbitrary reasons are challenged, you risk staying in a role for longer than you should, and you also prevent yourself from exploring other opportunities.

Ultimately, you should consider the value you are receiving and providing in a role to determine how long you should stay.
