Setting the table

People working through problems enjoy the opportunity to unload what’s on their mind. 

That’s why I enjoy starting QLA coaching sessions by inviting each person to “set the table”. 

The process is simple. To open the conversation, ask the person to list all the key subjects they think are relevant to the conversation. Give them the freedom to unload, and only jump in if they get a little too detailed with a particular point. 

Once they feel happy with what they’ve identified, ask them if there’s anything else they think is important to add to the list. 

Then it’s about sequencing the discussion. Just like a degustation, the order of the items is important. Work together to arrange the subjects so that the conversation flows, while appreciating that some of the subjects may need to be carried over to another conversation if timing is tight. 

Once the table is set, again invite the person to review the arrangement and consider if anything is missing. 

Only then should you begin the “meal” and dive into the first item. 

This process helps the person feel heard and provides structure to their thoughts. It also helps you as the facilitator get very clear on the potential outcomes you’re working towards with the discussion.
