Side hustles are businesses

I’ve been grateful to work with a few people that had full-time jobs while doing side hustles.

They were far more passionate about their side hustles than their jobs, and it was amazing to see how much more they applied themselves to this true long game.

When we started our conversations, many would refer to their endeavour as a side hustle. Though it wouldn’t take long for their language to shift and they’d call it their business.

To be clear, I’m not against the term side hustle at all. I think it’s a fabulous way to describe a pursuit outside your main income. It’s also an easier label if you want to try something new without feeling overwhelmed. Telling people you’re starting a side hustle feels a lot easier than saying you’re launching a business. So why not start a side hustle and see how it goes?

But at its core, every side hustle is a business. You may not currently need to register a business name, or draw an income, or have any employees. But it’s still your business, and it’s interesting to see how things shift when the label changes.

If you currently have a side hustle, how would it feel if you called it your business instead? Would you apply yourself differently?
