Terms of engagement

Every engagement is governed by terms that are important to both sides. The problem is that most times these terms are unspoken and unwritten.

The more explicit you can make these terms before entering an engagement, the better you both will be.

It’s extremely helpful for both sides to clearly state how they expect the engagement will go, and set requirements that satisfy everyone. Don’t just assume that each party will act in a certain way (especially your own behaviour). Clearly agree to terms up front so that you can reference these terms if conflict arises.

This doesn’t just apply to professional engagements either. Your personal engagements will become more meaningful if both sides are aware of the terms that are important.
