The chrysalis effect

I had a vulnerable conversation with Bec last week.

I’ve been proactively making some big changes in my life and I’m really enjoying the benefits (I’m happy to chat about these if you’re curious, just hit me up).

But there’s been a nagging thought that I haven’t shaken.

Some of these changes are so material, that I could see Ben from one year ago as being substantially different.

But if I’m making positive changes, what does that say about the guy from one year ago who was also really happy with life?

Bec was helpful (as always) in providing perspective.

She said this sounds like the “chrysalis effect”, which describes when a caterpillar is becoming a butterfly.

The caterpillar doesn’t know what they’re becoming.

They’re just aware they’re in the middle of a change process.

And you can’t compare a caterpillar to a butterfly because they are two different things.

You can be a great caterpillar and you can also be a great butterfly.

It was a nice framing exercise (though I’m still processing).

I’m not sure if you’re going through a change now or are thinking of going through one, but I hope you find this thought useful too.
