The “Getting going” tax

I’d love this post to serve as a lightbulb moment for you if you’ve been holding onto an ambition for a while.

For this blog, I’ll use the example of getting a job, but it applies to any ambition you have (big or small).

When professionals approach me for coaching to get a new job, I congratulate them and ask what action they’ve taken.

More often than not, the response is something like “Well, nothing yet, I’m just … [insert reason for waiting]”

Sometimes these reasons are valid, but the vast majority aren’t.

But giving a reason isn’t the actual problem here.

The actual problem is the underlying belief that they’ll be better placed to achieve their desired outcome in the future versus now.

They fail to recognise that they must pay a “get going” tax, and that tax is the same whether they start now or later.

Let’s return to the example of finding a job.

There is a base level of work that is required to ready yourself for a job search.

  • Dust off your resume.
  • Clean up your LinkedIn.
  • Get into a rhythm of applying for jobs.

Regardless of when you start applying, these steps will need to be completed, along with the time it takes for these efforts to translate into genuine job offers.

So if you have a moment that you’re waiting for, I suspect you haven’t added an extra buffer of “preparation” time.

I strongly encourage you to add this tax into the mix.

If doing so makes you uncomfortable, it should increase your motivation to pay the “get going” tax now.
