The mirror trick

I love telling this story to clients to shift perspective.

You may have heard it, but it’s worth repeating.

People used to complain that elevators were too slow.

The obvious solution was to make them faster.

But instead, someone put mirrors in them.

And the complaints stopped.

They still went the same speed, but the experience changed.

The mirrors gave people something more interesting to focus on.

I love the story because it helps professionals push to understand what they’re really trying to solve for when they want to make a change in their careers.

If you are dissatisfied at work or struggling towards a particular result, take a moment to reflect (haha, mirror pun).

What’s the actual problem you’re trying to solve?
