Have you ever been offered a role that isn’t what you want but promises to become what you want?
Tread carefully.
You should never rely on the promise that change will happen.
At the very least, you must have a strong and compelling reason to consider it.
This is because humans have a tendency of making promises that are ultimately outside of their control.
If you are faced with this prospect, look for evidence that the company has kept similar promises in the past.
Confirm who will be responsible for making the change happen and what specific conditions need to be met.
If the details are vague, the risk is high.
If you do accept the role, the onus is on you to keep the promise in focus.
If the promise is not kept, don’t double down on their assurances.
Instead, do all you can to clearly understand the state of play.
And while you do that, start searching for roles that directly align with the job you want.
Without clear boundaries, “a few months” can quietly turn into a year, and your career can drift away from where you intended it to go.
