In maths, you need three points to determine if a series is a straight line. I find this same metric very helpful to determine commitment.
Let’s say you have an ongoing engagement. If someone needs to reschedule, that’s perfectly ok. We all understand that life gets in the way, so it’s easy to set another time.
If the second time needs to be rescheduled, you start to wonder if things are ok, and offer any assistance you can to help. A general reason is usually given for the need to reschedule, and so you’re happy to oblige.
If the engagement needs to be rescheduled a third time, it indicates a trend. It’s important to lean in to understand if there’s a deeper element. But if the request is made to reschedule, it may be time to pause the engagement and maybe try again in the future.
This pattern of 3 is a useful indicator across many applications: invitations to social events, workouts at a gym, promises you make to yourself.
