Unnecessary risks

In Queensland, when you’re renting, it’s the property owner’s responsibility to ensure gutters are cleared and maintained to a working standard.

I know this, because when my friend was renting he was asked by the owner to clean the gutters.

As a carpenter, he was very aware of how risky it was to mount roofs and clean gutters.

But he wasn’t insured against a fall.

And the owner wasn’t prepared to cover him.

So because this request had all risk and no reward, he refused.

What would you have done in this situation?

I understand the argument that if no one did anything then society couldn’t function.

But it’s interesting to think about how quickly we can take on risk without seriously considering the upside AND downside.

There is risk in everything we do.

And you must take on risk to gain something.

But every risk you take should always have the potential of a commensurate reward.

Otherwise, why take it?
