Urgent decisions

Whenever a problem arises, I tend to overestimate the urgency to respond.

This isn’t a good system, as too often I will narrowly focus on resolving the problem quickly without considering their relative importance.

What I’ve found very helpful in working through this bias is reflecting on the research of Paul Nutt, who showed that only 10% of our decisions are urgent, and only 1% present during a true crisis.

For the vast majority of decisions that we make, we have sufficient time to consider them fully. So when you feel compelled to solve a problem in the moment, take a breath and reflect on how urgent a decision really is.
