Valuing different values

When you’re in a relationship, it’s important to accept that your partner will have different values to you.

While this may seem obvious, the more time that passes, the more the differences will become pronounced.

Early in a relationship, you may view your differences with affection. But challenges arise when these differences require either side to change their behaviour.

As an example, you may value your career highly and you’re keen to relocate if exciting opportunities present. If this ambition is not extensively discussed with your partner, there will come a time when your relationship will really be questioned.

The best thing you can do is discuss your values early, and keep discussing them. Conversations about your differences will help you align as a couple, or they will help you appreciate that you’re on separate paths that may not come together.

If you don’t discuss each other’s values, you may suddenly find yourselves in a very difficult position.
