You can tell a lot about the culture of an organisation when someone resigns.
Take special note of how key personnel respond to their announcement.
Do they focus immediately on the individual and seek to foster their connection?
Or is their focus on how they may personally benefit, as if the person has already left?
You may think that it’s fine for people to consider self-interest in these situations. But too much self-interest can send a strong signal to the others that remain – as soon as you leave, regardless of how loyal you were, that connection ends too.
The culture of an organisation is preserved by the people that stay, not the people that leave.
In all your dealings, be sure to set an example that’s consistently genuine, regardless of who is in the room.
