What have you tried so far?

When someone approaches you with a problem or would like your advice, it’s tempting to reply with potential solutions. 

That seems reasonable, right? 

I mean, why would they be asking you for your thoughts otherwise?

Well, there’s one simple question you could ask first that will take your guidance to another level.

“What have you tried so far?”

This has a profound effect in a number of ways:

  1. The person will feel more appreciated and heard.
  2. The person could feel a sense of relief from addressing some of the frustrations about what they’ve tried which hasn’t worked. 
  3. The person could eliminate some of the solutions you were about to suggest. 
  4. You will gain a better understanding of what the actual problem could be.
