When we respond to a situation with emotion, it’s important to understand the message we are actually delivering.
We may frame the discussion as wanting to work through a problem.
We may say that we’re fine and that we just want to solve the issue.
But really we want our feelings to be acknowledged.
When we’re angry, or disappointed, or upset, there is a big part of us that really just wants the other person to know how we’re feeling.
This is the message that is being delivered.
It’s better to focus on the emotion first before diving into the perceived issue. The issue never seems as big once our emotions feel heard.
