Some people go into business because they like the thought of not reporting to someone else.
But this sentiment may be misplaced in a number of ways.
For starters, you’ll always be working for someone. Whether it’s an employer or a client, you’re never truly operating independently.
When you’re starting out in business or when things are tough, you may need to supplement your income. But would you turn down a steady income if that meant reporting to someone else?
At some point you may also want to return to a traditional job. But the longer you carry the sentiment that you don’t need to report to someone else, the more internal conflict you’ll create with this decision.
Going into business should be seen as one way you can deliver value, not the only way. Make sure you are clear on your reasons for doing so. Unless you do nothing, you’ll also report to someone.
