Your manager’s manager

In order to have a better working relationship with your manager, try to understand the working relationship they have with their manager.

Your manager will have certain targets and expectations set by their manager, and these will form the basis of the targets and expectations your manager sets with you.

This flow-on effect also extends to culture and behaviour.

If your manager’s manager is under a lot of stress, it would be difficult for your manager to not let that impact your relationship. The same goes if your manager’s manager is highly energised and supportive.

So whenever your manager’s actions or decisions leave you wondering, try to view the situation from a level above.
