My partner Bec called me out recently.
I floated an idea and she paused.
She then asked, “Is that a high-energy promise?”
I’d never heard the term before.
She explained.
“Ben, you do this all the time. When you’re full of energy you throw something out there in the moment. But when the moment passes, so does your energy and it doesn’t happen”.
A high-energy promise is such a cool expression to politely call someone out.
Bec does a great job at holding up a mirror when I don’t expect it.
And she’s right.
It’s easy to confuse the energy of an idea with the energy required to make it real.
But I’m doing more than just throwing out an idea.
I’m actually throwing out an expectation.
Which is another word for a promise.
And sure, it’s not a grand declaration.
But it still means something.
And every time I don’t follow through, I’m breaking that promise.
I still like high-energy moments and getting excited by an idea.
But I must remember that trust gets built in the quiet that follows.
